hedgiewan: (night launch)
Our lovely Minnesota weather has recently taken a turn for the... more normal. Our seasonally appalling mid-30's have dropped to a nice round zero (disregarding the wind chill). Our living room, which has a wood fireplace (and so loses heat fastest), was getting a little chilly, so I figured I'd turn on the radiator in the dining room, thus increasing our count of active radiators to two (of five). A day later, our entire apartment is too hot. Now, this is one of the "benefits" of living in a heat-paid building--the head trip you get when you think about what their heating costs oughta be regulated by the FDA.

Countdown: two weeks from now, I'll be in Germany! Where it is, like, 50F. I'm totally bringing my bikini.

If you were going to drop everything right now, go home and pack a small duffel, and spend the rest of the week somewhere else, where would it be? Like any other fantasy-adventure, remember, money is no object.

Outside is full of a drizzle-mist of cold and seeping gloom, and it reminds me of all the times that I have spent days and slept nights outside in this same weather, of food over campfires and wool and tents, or of walking to class, head-bent and scurrying. It is a visceral unpleasantness, and encourages daydreams of more temperate climes. I've never canoed in FL, for example.

But as for anywhere, now is a great time for the old cliche of a beach. With a hammock. I don't even need umbrella drinks, just someplace warm to sleep and sleep and sleep. Not someplace touristy- an otherwise ignored stretch of Saudi Arabian shoreline sounds fantastic. I will trudge on sand and read Cometbus and eat dried fruit and not see another person for days. Then I will be done and warm and calm and ready to see trees again. How about you?
