Friday was for dealing with the little stuff at work that had been neglected as we tried to gather as much supporting information as possible for the newest NSF grant. The grant is out. We'll hear back no earlier than October. Please don't ask before then.

Then [livejournal.com profile] mairi2 and I braved the HighlandFest for Harry Potter, which was absolutely worth seeing. Rupert Grint and Tom Felton have turned into pretty good actors. Too bad it's not "Ronald Weasley and the Half Blood Prince." But I will also admit to a significant Weasley Bias.

Mary and I stopped at Merlin's Rest for night at the pub, wherefrom I was transferred to the capable paws of Mya for an adventure in Microcinema: the second screening of Sherlock Jr with The Electric House at the Trylon microcinema at 32nd and Minnehaha. Those are two of my favorite Buster Keaton movies, there was live music (musical saw! does it get any better?), the seats were comfy, the snacks were reasonable, and I don't think I've ever been that happy to be in a sold-out movie theatre before! Keep an eye out for future screenings at http://take-up.org/.

Saturday was my daycare sister's wedding reception. Katie was my closest cohort, and we had some pretty good times growing up. Even if she is bossy. It is weird to see someone you used to see daily and haven't seen for more than a couple hours at a time in years. I think this must be what most peoples' family gatherings are like, but I am unaccustomed.

It was cool and cloudy and I meant to do some grooming of my car, some rustbusting and washing and waxing, but Mya didn't have to go to Ely after all, so we got a head start on Jesse Stone mysteries. Enough of a head start that we got to watch The Italian Job after, but not such a head start that Brixton didn't fall asleep. I should really be watching more heist movies.

Brixton dropped me off at Mary and Dan's, where I holed up in the attic for a day of fishing. I caught a sunburn and some sunfish, discovered that my shoulder is not in as good of shape as it could be, and just now caught a case of deja vu. Which probably just means that I've had to remember and retype bits of this entry too many times, trying to catch all the places where my pissy keyboard has refused to type the "i" that I told it to type. How does all this cat hair get in here, anyway?

Probably the same way my issue of Monica's "Abandon Everything, Save Yourself" propaganda got crumpled. And the same way there are tiny bits of cardboard on my kitchen floor. And holes in my couch. Ruiners.

it's funny when b and i come to the same conclusions at the same time, independently, but it is getting frustrating that my future plans thwart me so much. it is stupid things like hair dye to big things like houses. the future uncertain is, yes, but it makes me a grump. the solution is, really, to nail said future plans, but my gosh they are big and scary and expensive.

i am going on an adventure soon, though. i leave for MA in a week for reunions and visits and weddings. well, one wedding. i have dresses and hope it is warm so i can wear dresses every day. dresses and glasses and no socks (i hate socks) and beer to drink that i cannot drink at home. maybe there will be someone for me to kiss in Mass. ha ha! my last kiss was a hurried affair, as L had a song to finish singing.

mr. underfoot likes the windows open, with good smells and eye-level events, but he does not approve of neighborly animals who investigate. it seems like he complains the most when it's 4am, and i just now realized that his reaction is probably determined in part by the type of animal. fluffycat is ok, but raccoons aren't?

there was an orange-and-white cat in the alley on the way home from beer with mya with only one hind leg. neatly healed, but missing a lot, no stump. had a collar and tags, but was he like that before he was an outdoor cat? a bizarre combination of comical gait and feelings of concern.

of course, if they're outdoor cats, they don't shed all over your keyboard. i'm looking at you, loaf.

science has been very frustrating lately, with long hours leading up to no difference between treatment and control, and data that make me want to beat my head against the wall. does slicing compared to cutting in half really make that much difference? does that mean that we can't even use two halves of an adrenal in two different dishes because we can't quantify cortex vs. medulla? if you turn the sun into a black hole of the same mass, does everything get sucked in?

ok, i lie, i know the answer to the last one. roberto orci and alex kurtzman do not, however.

tomorrow is for a cd. and for talking about science going wrong, and magic (yes, the gathering), and finding rubber and getting rained on. god, i want to be warm so badly. baking in the sun. thunderstorms and heat-madness movies. not tomorrow, though.

Still boxes everywhere. Nowhere to put anything else. Please, no more loveseat? Also, does anyone want an ugly-but-relatively-functional sewing basket? How about a pair of khaki stretch corduroys from the Gap? They are ostensibly a 12L, but all my other 12L's fit me and these don't, so I would say more like a 10L. Also a three-drawer rubbermaid thingydo. It's white and about a foot cubed. How about onea' them double window-fans? Or, I don't know, some crap. Take it off my hands. Pleeeeease.

This one, Mom, I blame on you. If something is still useful to someone, I can't possibly throw it away. I can't even just put it out in the alley and hope someone will take it. Fuck, it took me two years just to get to the point where I could throw out plastic zipper bags, and that is mostly because I don't have a good way to dry them unless I wash a wooden spoon at the same time. I BLAME YOU.

Also, why does Medica send me these "explanation of benefit" letters every time I even think about going to the Dr? How much paper do I really need in my life?! Just for them to tell me that my health insurance is absolutely worthwhile, but that if I want to appeal their decision to pay for everything, I should call the number listed below.

Meg and Brixton and I were supposed to have knitting tonight, but I think I did more rows on the bus home than I did this evening. We got to Meg's about 7:30, got mauled by her "cat," and were informed that there was no food and she hadn't eaten and maybe we'd like to go to this new pub by her house. It's on Selby at Fairview, called the Blue Door, and they have excellent food, quite reasonably priced. But also, not a ton of room. Also also, big TV's set to the Twins game. So it took a hell of a long time for us to get a place to sit. But it's a nice place. They have juicy lucys made with bleu cheese and garlic. And beer-battered green beans. And "soup of the jour." Which is either funny or depressing.

I don't like the fact that my lips are already chapped, or that my skin has a white sheen from being too dry, or that we seem to have skipped "the sun sets at 8" in favor of "the sun sets at 7," but I love that I get to wear sweaters and sleep with my comforter and that the sumac on 94 has gone all glorious on us.

But I'm totally going to freeze my butt off in the Boundary Waters, because Dan and I are going again in 2.5 weeks. Brave or stupid? EP 16, Moose River N. Probably have to wade the whole river, but Nina Moose sounds good. We'll see how far we get from there. I think we're taking the canvas tent with the stove. Heated tent. FTW.

You know, I shouldn't have to scold my cat, "you've been playing in the onions again!" Who wants to roll around in a bunch of toxic onions?

Apparently, Jack.

Man. Today was a doozy. I am plum tuckered out.

And my cat is crazy. Crazy like a queen bee who idolizes Caligula and eats a lot of cheese. A LOT of cheese, kids.
