A lot has happened. I should write more often, especially given my extremely unreliable memory. Daunting, though. How exactly does one sum up: today on the bus I realized that there really is no god. there is no soul. everything we are is informed entirely by the chemical processes tied to our bodies.

Well, I suppose that's how. It's kind of embarrassing, really, and frankly not a good perspective for a scientist who relies on public funding (not that I'll have to worry about that for years, but whatever). Embarrassing because it really isn't that big of a revelation, and if you'd asked me before that I still would've said that I'm an atheist, but man, that just hit me like a ton of rubber ducks. Absurd, but still fucking heavy.

I have a new bike. Her name is Thisbe. Any and all naming-inanimate-objects naysayers can go live in their cold, empty little world all by themselves. Thisbe is beautiful. I'm scared to ride her much of anywhere until I get a hardcore lock, because I am a big wuss who was horribly scarred by the loss of her first bicycle. Your life may be easier when your stuff gets stolen, but still... Cold, empty little world.

The horrors of moving are soon upon us, but at least the horrors of apartment-hunting are behind. Mya and I have found a place in uptown that will be an easy-enough commute for each of us, and has a fireplace to boot. For now, I will appreciate the eye of the storm, and attempt to ignore all the crap I have in my house, most of which is either boring papers that I should keep but don't want to, or fun trinkets that I have no damn use for but don't actually want to part with. I'd make a great dragon.

the hedge abides.

p.s.- Surly's IPA is wicked. With full-on Ontario inflection. Whiiiickid. Also, places that serve beer at lunch should be legally required to offer half-pints. Dammit.

Yeah, the weight of that thought smacked me around quite a bit when it really sunk in for the first time. It's intensely liberating in a way, though.

On the subject of naming objects: I just realized that I've had my car, Luna, for six years, and I named her the day I bought her, but I've had my current trusty mountain bike for over ten years without a name. I think it's reached the stage where naming it would be like naming one of my toes - it's just a part of me, and doesn't need a name anymore.

If you want help with the impending move, gimme a yell.

Thisbe is an awesome name. Is it from the Secret of Nimh? Or am I just making an odd connection?

Me too! It was one of my favorite movies. That and the Dark Crystal.

Thisbe was the lover of Pyramus in one of those tragic love stories of which the Romans were so fond. Shakespeare mentions them both in the play w/in a play of Midsummer Night's Dream, as well as in the Merchant of Venice, whence the title of this entry comes (the wonderful spat between Jessica and Lorenzo).

I have weird vague memories of the Secret of Nimh. I think that was one of those movies that I saw bits of, but I've never seen the whole thing all at once. That should be fixed.
